Radiofrequency Ablation (VNUS Closure®, ClosureFast™, Venefit™)

What is Radiofrequency Ablation

The VNUS Closure® or RF closure (radiofrequency closure) is a minimally invasive alternative to traditional vein surgery, and is used to treat saphenous, superficial, and varicose veins. Unlike traditional vein surgery, RF closure is performed in our office under local anesthesia.

How does it work

During RF closure, a tiny radiofrequency catheter is inserted into the vein and delivers gentle RF energy as it is withdrawn. This heats the vein wall, causing the collagen in the wall to shrink and the vein to close. Once the diseased vein is closed, blood is re-routed to other, healthy veins.

How long is the treatment

Depending on the areas that need to be treated, RF closure takes approximately 45 to 60 minutes. The procedure offers a quick recovery and most patients resume normal activities the same day.

Side Effects

You may experience some post-procedure bruising, redness, swelling, and/or tenderness at the site of the injection. Infection can occur, but precautions are taken to mitigate the risk. There are some reports of thermal (heat) damage to nerves, however it is uncommon and generally goes away in a short period of time. Blood clots formed in the veins can travel to the lungs, but this is also extremely rare.
