What Causes Spider Veins?

Do you have veins that seem to be very prominent and obvious under your skin? Those are probably spider veins.

Medically referred to as Telangiectasias, spider veins are small and dilated blood vessels that appear near the surface of the skin. They can be red, blue, green or even purple, and commonly occur on your legs. At Virginia Vein Care, our vein clinic treats spider veins on the face and legs.

Spider veins are a normal development as people age.

Sometimes spider veins can be related to underlying venous insufficiency and should have proper consultation by a physician.

There are many factors that would lead to one having spider veins including lifestyle, overall health, and physical appearance. Women are also more prone to having them due to the hormonal changes, especially those that occur with pregnancy. Some patients will have spider veins that resemble a spider web, while others may resemble a tree with branches. While these are not preventable, they are easily treated with sclerotherapy treatments.

Spider vein treatment is an in-office procedure, and can consist of several treatments. Most schlerotherapists requests patients to wear compression stockings after treatment.  It is important to note that spider vein treatment may require treatment and touch ups every few years, much like most cosmetic procedures.
